THC Causes DNA Change in Sperm Says Duke University

After decades of testing cannabis on mice, rats, and other animals Duke University Medical Center has apparently conducted a test on humans in regard to cannabis and sperm. According to Duke University Medical Center exposure to cannabis alters the genetic profile of sperm. It’s unknown or unclear if these genetic changes are reversible or even passed along to children. According to the study summary men that are sexually active looking to impregnate a woman may want to consider the effects of THC on their body.

The Duke University Study

Duke University Medical Center claims  THC triggers regulatory and structural changes of the DNA in sperm. The study took place on rats and 24 random men. Of course, 24 men and a group of rats are definitely worth basing the world’s health on. To me, this sounds more like age-old anti-marijuana propaganda. While this study is conducted by Duke University, there is another study that is published on the NCBI under the United States National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health called “Five-Year Follow-Up Of Rural Jamaican Children Whose Mothers Used Marijuana During Pregnancy.”

Another Study Worth Noting

This study includes 59 Jamaican children over more than a 5 year period. A five-year follow-up determined there were no significant differences between children of non-cannabis consuming mothers and children of cannabis consuming mothers except for around the 30-day age. At this point, the cannabis consuming mother’s children scored significantly higher on the Brazelton Scales for atomic stability and reflexes.

The Natural Thought

If anything this shows that cannabis consuming parents children received extra benefits from the phytocannabinoids in their system. From the time of birth, you have an endocannabinoid system. Cannabinoids occur naturally in breastmilk. It’s only natural that phytocannabinoids would stand to help a breastfeeding mother have a healthier body. So the next time you hear a study about THC hurting your sperm remember there are still people out there that cling to anti-marijuana propaganda.
