The top priorities of the 2019 agenda for New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is making headlines with one of those priorities being the legalization of recreational adult use cannabis in New York. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has opposed both medical and recreational cannabis up until now. In an address to the public that outlined his priorities for 2019, he said
“We must end the needless and unjust criminal convictions and the debilitating criminal stigma and let’s legalize the adult use of recreational marijuana once and for all,” to the New York Bar Association.
As far back as 2013, you can find Cuomo making remarks about medical marijuana saying the risks outweighed the benefits. Perhaps his viewpoint has changed because of the mass abundance of information available about cannabis. Maybe he did a little digging through political archives and looked at the 1942 LaGuardia Commission Reports conducted by the New York Academy of Medicine regarding the effects of marijuana. It seems as if New York governor Andrew Cuomo is starting to incorporate the idealistic and truthful reviews that were established in the 1942 LaGuardia Commision Report on Marijuana.
It’s Time for Change in the Big Apple
In recent months New York has made headlines for its targeting of people of color for cannabis arrests. Poor neighborhoods and minorities have been the center of focus for police harassment according to people who live in New York. This profiling of minorities and any and everyone else looks like it is coming to an end in regard to cannabis consumption. New York also has many problems that legal recreational adult use cannabis could stand to help fix. Issues such as an underfunded subway system, highways, and other municipal services. It looks like the Big Apple might see the signs of green as early as next year when voters are almost guaranteed to vote in favor of recreational cannabis for the state of New York.
